The Abbey of Saint Gall is a Benedictine abbey complex in the city of St. Gallen, Switzerland, founded by Saint Othmar on the spot where Saint Gall had erected his hermitage. It became an independent principality and one of the chief Benedictine abbeys in Europe, and its library is among the oldest monastic libraries in the world. The abbey was secularized around 1800, and its former church became St. Gallen Cathedral in 1848. The precinct has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
