The Abelardo L. Rodriguez Market is a traditional public market in the historic center of Mexico City, northeast of the Zócalo. Built in 1934 as a prototype for a more modern marketplace, it includes a day care and an auditorium. Its most distinctive feature is roughly 1,450 square metres of wall and ceiling murals, painted by artists including some former helpers of Diego Rivera, whose works mostly address socialist themes such as the exploitation of workers, peasants and miners, opposition to Nazism and fascism, and racial discrimination.
