Designed by Edwin Lutyens as one of his final war memorials, the Abercorn Memorial stands on a roundabout on Mbala's M1 road in Zambia, comprising a truncated red stone column maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The memorial commemorates 1,467 men from Northern Rhodesia who served as carriers for the British Army during the East African campaign of the First World War and died in action, from wounds, or from sickness—though their individual names remain unrecorded. Plaques on the monument mark the surrender of German forces in East Africa on 25 November 1918, when General Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck formally laid down arms before British General William F.S. Edwards, concluding the East African campaign. The site recalls Abercorn's strategic importance as the northernmost outpost of British colonial presence in southern Africa, positioned on the border of German East Africa and subjected to repeated German attacks from late 1914 onward.
