The Achilleion is a palace and museum at Gastouri, about ten kilometres south of Corfu city in the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, Greece. Built in 1890 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria as a summer refuge after the death of her son, Crown Prince Rudolf, it was designed to suggest the ancient palace of mythical Phaeacia, with its motif centred on the hero Achilles, from whom its name derives. It overlooks the city to the north and the Ionian Sea to the east, and today operates as a museum.
