Al-Zaytunah Mosque stands at the centre of the historic medina of Tunis, Tunisia, and is the oldest mosque in the city. It was founded at the end of the 7th or early 8th century, and its current form dates largely from a 9th-century reconstruction that reused many antique columns from Carthage. Over time it grew into the University of Ez-Zitouna, the most important educational institution in Tunisia from around the 13th century, and it is a listed monument of Tunisia.
