Alfred Lerner Hall is Columbia University's student center, located on the Morningside Heights campus in Manhattan and completed in 1999. Designed by deconstructivist architect Bernard Tschumi, then dean of Columbia's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, the building replaces Ferris Booth Hall as the primary gathering space for students. The structure balances contextual restraint with architectural innovation: its redbrick facade and proportions respect the historic streetwall along Broadway and the neoclassical vocabulary of neighboring McKim, Mead, and White buildings, while a monumental glass curtain wall—fabricated by Eiffel Constructions Metalliques—opens dramatically onto the campus interior. Within, a series of escalating ramps creates a unified social space reminiscent of Low Memorial Library's iconic steps. The building houses dining facilities (including the Ferris Booth cafeteria), the Roone Arledge cinema and auditorium, performance and event spaces, student lounges, club areas, and administrative offices, making it a comprehensive hub for campus life.
