The Almudena Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral in Madrid, Spain, and the seat of the Archdiocese of Madrid. Designed by Francisco de Cubas and begun in 1883, it blends historicist, Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival and Neoclassical styles, with granite as its principal material. Construction ran over a century, and Pope John Paul II consecrated it in 1993. It stands opposite the Royal Palace, which shaped much of its final appearance.
