The Altare della Patria, also called the Vittoriano or the Victor Emmanuel II National Monument, stands in Rome between Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. Built between 1885 and 1935 to designs by Giuseppe Sacconi, it honours Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. Conceived as a three-level modern forum dominated by a colonnaded portico, it is faced in Botticino marble and rises 81 metres. The name Altar of the Fatherland properly refers to one part of the monument, which holds the tomb of the Italian Unknown Soldier.
