The Altenberger Dom in Odenthal, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a former Cistercian abbey church built beginning in 1259 in the Gothic style. Originally the burial site of counts and dukes of Berg and the dukes of Jülich-Berg until 1511, the church was severely damaged when the monastery was dissolved during Germany's secularisation in 1803. It was subsequently rebuilt with the support of Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, who decreed in 1857 that it serve as a parish church for both Catholic and Protestant congregations—a shared arrangement known as a simultaneum. Today recognized as an architectural heritage monument, the building preserves its Gothic character despite its turbulent history.
