Arkadi Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery on a fertile plateau about 23 kilometres southeast of Rethymno on Crete. Its 16th-century katholikon mixes Roman and Baroque elements in a Renaissance Revival design, and the site is surrounded by a thick, high wall. During the Cretan revolt of 1866, the monastery became a national sanctuary after defenders, rather than surrender, blew up barrels of gunpowder.
