The Art Gallery of New South Wales stands in The Domain in Sydney, Australia, and is the most important public gallery in the city and one of the largest in the country. Founded in 1872 as the New South Wales Academy of Art, it held its first public exhibition in 1874 and was known as the National Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1883 to 1958. Admission to its general exhibition space is free, and it displays Australian art, including Indigenous Australian art, alongside European and Asian works. The Neoclassical building is credited to John Horbury Hunt and dates from 1880.
