Bacon's Castle
Surry County, United States

Exterior only
Visible from the street; the inside is private.
Bacon's Castle stands in Surry County, Virginia, and is the oldest documented brick dwelling in what is now the United States, built in 1665. It is an extremely rare example of Carolean architecture in the New World. Its name comes from its use as a fort by followers of Nathaniel Bacon during Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, though Bacon himself never lived there or is known to have visited. Today it is a historic house museum and National Historic Landmark.
