The Doberan Minster in Bad Doberan, Mecklenburg, is a masterwork of Brick Gothic architecture and the most significant surviving structure from the former Cistercian monastery of Doberan Abbey, dedicated in 1368. Founded in 1171 as Mecklenburg's first abbey, it served as the political and spiritual center of the region, contributing substantially to the cultural and economic development of the area near the Baltic Sea and the Hanseatic city of Rostock. Remarkably, the minster preserves an unparalleled amount of original medieval interior furnishings for a European Cistercian abbey, including the oldest winged altar in art history, a monumental cross altar, and the sculpted tomb of Danish Queen Margarete Sambiria. Following the Reformation and the abbey's dissolution in 1552, the church transitioned to Lutheran use while remaining the principal burial site for the Mecklenburg ruling family. Today it stands as an exemplary monument to medieval creativity and a key landmark on the European Route of Brick Gothic.
