A brutalist bank building designed by Sir Basil Spence and constructed between 1968 and 1971 in Newcastle upon Tyne, this structure exemplified the bold, massive concrete forms characteristic of mid-twentieth-century modernism. Spence's design featured the angular, geometric vocabulary typical of brutalist architecture, with its emphasis on raw materials and sculptural massing. The building served the financial district of Newcastle until its demolition in 2012, marking the end of one of the city's significant postwar architectural statements.
