Baron Bliss Lighthouse stands in Belize City, Belize, on the former site of a Spanish fortress damaged after the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798. Established in 1885, it is painted white and red and named for Baron Bliss, a sailor and fisherman who never set foot on Belizean shores but admired the hospitality of its people. After his death in 1926, he was buried in a granite tomb near the sea, and the lighthouse was built nearby in his remembrance.
