The Basilica of St. John the Baptist stands in the Neukölln quarter of Berlin, built of brick in the Romanesque Revival style. Architect August Menken conceived it as a basilica in the Romanesque manner of the Rhine, and it was solemnly inaugurated on May 8, 1897, in the presence of Emperor William II and Empress Augusta Victoria. Pope Pius X later awarded it the title of Minor Basilica in 1906, and it serves as the cathedral seat of the Military Ordinariate of Germany.
