The Minor Basilica of St. Lawrence the Deacon & Martyr is a Catholic church in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, designed and built in 1905 by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino, who is interred there, with R. S. Smith and the local Catholic community. Pope John Paul II elevated it to minor basilica status in 1993, making it the only basilica in western North Carolina. Its elliptical dome, reputed to be the largest freestanding elliptical dome in North America, spans 58 by 82 feet.
