The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands on Castle Hill in the heart of Kielce, Poland, beside the former Palace of the Bishops of Kraków. Built of dimension stone, it was begun in 1719 by Bishop Kazimierz Lubieński, who rebuilt the church in the early Baroque style that still characterises it, after an earlier 12th-century church was destroyed by Tartars in 1260. It became the cathedral of the new Diocese of Kielce in 1805.
