The Bastille was a medieval stone fortress in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, built from 1370 to guard the eastern approach to the city during the Hundred Years' War. Its eight towers guarded the Porte Saint-Antoine, and its innovative design was widely copied in France and England. Used for most of its history as a state prison, it was stormed by a crowd on 14 July 1789 during the French Revolution, then demolished and replaced by the Place de la Bastille.
