Beaumaris Castle stands in Beaumaris on Anglesey, Wales, begun in 1295 under James of St George as part of Edward I's campaign to conquer north Wales. Built of limestone, it has a moated outer ward with twelve towers and two gatehouses surrounding an inner ward of six massive towers, a symmetrical concentric plan historian Arnold Taylor called Britain's "most perfect example." Never completed, it is now a National Monument of Wales, a Grade I listed building and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
