Bellver Castle, a distinctive Gothic fortress perched on a hill three kilometers west of Palma de Mallorca, was constructed in the 14th century for King James II of Majorca. Built from marès stone, the castle is remarkable as one of Europe's few circular fortifications. Originally serving as a royal residence, it later functioned as a military prison from the 18th through mid-20th centuries. Today the castle operates as a civilian-controlled site, housing the city's History Museum and serving as one of Mallorca's principal tourist attractions. It holds the status of bien de interés cultural (cultural heritage asset) in Spain.
