The Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana is a state public library and conservation library in Venice, Italy, one of the earliest surviving public libraries in the country. Cardinal Bessarion founded it in 1468 by donating his collection of Greek and Latin manuscripts to the Republic of Venice. Its building on Saint Mark's Square, with a long façade facing the Doge's Palace, was constructed between 1537 and 1588 to designs by Jacopo Sansovino in the Renaissance style and is considered his masterpiece. It is protected as Italian national heritage.
