The Black Church stands in Brașov, in south-eastern Transylvania, Romania. Begun in 1383 by the city's Transylvanian Saxon community, it is the main Gothic monument in the country and the largest Lutheran house of worship in the region. Rising 65 metres, it is a cathedral. Author Judit Petki contends its dark colour stems from recent pollution rather than the 1689 fire, and the popular name is apparently a 19th-century creation.
