Its visitor center occupies the 1844 Presley Tyler home, and the surrounding Tyler Settlement was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a rural historic district in 1986. The preserve was created in 1979 when Judge Macauley and Emilie Smith gave the land to the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves.
