Blackness Castle is a 15th-century fortress on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, near the village of Blackness in Scotland. Sir George Crichton probably built it in the 1440s, possibly on the site of an earlier fort, and it passed to James II of Scotland in 1453, remaining crown property since. Strengthened in the mid-16th century by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, it became one of the most advanced artillery fortifications in Scotland, though it fell to Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650. Its long, narrow form jutting into the Forth has led to it being called "the ship that never sailed."
