The Boston Athenæum is a membership library and art museum at 10½ Beacon Street on Beacon Hill in Boston, and one of the oldest independent libraries in the United States. Founded in 1807 by the Anthology Club of Boston, it holds a rare book collection of over 100,000 volumes and an art collection of about 100,000 objects. Its Renaissance Revival building was designed by Bigelow and Wadsworth with Edward Clarke Cabot, and it is a National Historic Landmark.
