The Brandenburg Gate is a neoclassical sandstone monument in Berlin, Germany, and one of the country's best-known landmarks. Built from 1788 to 1791 under King Frederick William II of Prussia to designs by the royal architect Carl Gotthard Langhans, it replaced a former city gate on the road to Brandenburg an der Havel. Its bronze quadriga crowning the gate is the work of Johann Gottfried Schadow. The Berlin Wall obstructed the gateway until its fall in 1989.
