Bratislava Castle, the dominant fortress of Slovakia's capital, rises from an isolated rocky hill of the Little Carpathians directly above the Danube River. Built beginning in 1431 in the Gothic architectural style, the massive rectangular structure features four corner towers and commands panoramic views across Bratislava, Austria, and—in clear weather—parts of Hungary. Its commanding position and substantial scale have made it a defining feature of the city's skyline for centuries, and its history is woven through with numerous legends.
