Brough Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Brough, Cumbria, England. William Rufus built it around 1092 within the old Roman fort of Verterae to protect a key route through the Pennine Mountains. Scots destroyed the original motte and bailey in 1174, and after rebuilding a square keep was added. Anne Clifford restored the castle between 1659 and 1661, but a fire in 1666 left it uninhabitable. Given to the state in 1921, it is now run by English Heritage as a tourist attraction and is a scheduled monument.
