Brougham Castle is a medieval castle ruin about 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Penrith, Cumbria, England, near the confluence of the rivers Eamont and Lowther. Robert I de Vieuxpont founded it in the early 13th century on the site of a Roman fort called Brocavum. From 1296, Robert Clifford, 1st Baron de Clifford, replaced its wooden outer defences with stone walls and added a large stone gatehouse. The castle and the Roman fort together form a Scheduled Monument.
