Buckingham Palace, in the City of Westminster, London, is the official residence and administrative headquarters of the British monarch. Built in 1703 as a townhouse for the Duke of Buckingham and Normanby, it was acquired by George III in 1761 and enlarged in the early 19th century by John Nash and Edward Blore around a central courtyard. It became the monarch's London residence on Queen Victoria's accession in 1837 and is a Grade I listed building.
