Built in 539, the Byzantine Fort in Timgad stands within the remains of the ancient Roman city in Batna Province, Algeria. Constructed in Byzantine architectural style, the fortress represents a later defensive addition to the site during the Eastern Roman Empire's period of control over North Africa. Today the fort forms part of Timgad's UNESCO World Heritage Site, which preserves one of the finest examples of Roman town planning in the Maghreb alongside evidence of subsequent Byzantine occupation.
