The Cabo da Roca Lighthouse stands on a granite and limestone promontory 165 metres above the Atlantic, at the westernmost point of Portugal and continental Europe, in the civil parish of Colares in the municipality of Sintra. A stone third-order lighthouse 22 metres tall, it dates its construction to 1758 and originally began operating in 1772. It was the first purpose-built new lighthouse constructed in Portugal, as earlier lights were placed on existing platforms or pre-existing beacons.
