Cape Coast Castle stands in Cape Coast, in Ghana's Central Region, and is one of about forty large commercial forts built on the Gold Coast by European traders. Originally a Portuguese trading post established in 1555, it was rebuilt in 1653 as a timber fort by the Swedish Africa Company under the name Carolusborg. Its dungeons were later used in the Atlantic slave trade, and it is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
