The Cape Lookout Lighthouse stands on the southern Outer Banks of North Carolina, in Carteret County. Built in 1859, it rises 163 feet (about 49 m) and flashes every 15 seconds, visible up to 19 miles at sea. It is one of very few lighthouses in the United States that operate during the day, and it became fully automated in 1950. It is the only U.S. lighthouse to bear a checkered daymark, whose diamond pattern also indicates direction: the centers of the black diamonds point north-south, and those of the white diamonds point east-west.
