Casa Vicens, situated in Barcelona's Gràcia neighbourhood, is Antoni Gaudí's first major architectural project, constructed between 1883 and 1885 from designs developed from 1878 to 1880. The modernist building exemplifies Catalan Modernisme filtered through Gaudí's distinctive orientalist sensibility, drawing inspiration from Neo-Mudéjar and broader Eastern artistic traditions—including Indian, Persian, and Japanese influences alongside Hispanic Islamic forms. Built with brick and lavish ceramic glazing, the house features characteristic elements of Gaudí's oriental phase: abundant ceramic tiling, Moorish arches, exposed brick columns, and temple- or dome-shaped finishes. Originally conceived with expansive gardens, the property was later subdivided; Gaudí ingeniously designed three façades for the constrained urban plot, attaching the house to an adjacent convent via a dividing wall. A 1925 extension, commissioned to Gaudí but delegated to protégé Joan Baptista Serra, completed the building's detachment while maintaining Gaudí's original aesthetic. The work caused considerable public sensation upon completion and is now recognized as a Cultural Asset of National Interest and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
