The Castle of Guimarães is a medieval fortification in the municipality of Guimarães, northern Portugal, and a National Monument of Portugal. Mumadona Dias ordered its construction in the 10th century to defend the monastery from attacks by Moors and Norsemen. Its walls form a pentagram-like, shield-shaped enclosure with eight rectangular towers and a central keep, reflecting late Romanesque origins with Gothic elements added during remodelling at the end of the 13th century.
