Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago de Guatemala is the main Catholic church of Guatemala City, standing on the Parque Central in the city centre. Begun in 1815 and credited to Santiago Marquí, Marcos Ibáñez and Antonio Bernasconi, it is a Neoclassical building whose massive structure also incorporates baroque and classical elements. It has withstood numerous earthquakes, and damage from 1917 and 1976 has been repaired. In front stand 12 pillars commemorating thousands of people forcibly disappeared or murdered during Guatemala's internal armed conflict.
