The Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa stands in Tartus, Syria, a Romanesque building erected during the 12th century. Historians have described it as the best-preserved religious structure of the Crusades. Pilgrims revered the site because Saint Peter was said to have founded a small church there dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After the Mamluks captured the cathedral, it was converted into a mosque, and today it serves as the National Museum of Tartus.
