The Cathedral of Saint Demetrius in Craiova, Romania, serves as the seat of the Metropolis of Oltania in the historic region of Oltenia. Though a church likely stood on the site by the 1490s—renovated in 1651 but eventually falling into disrepair—the present structure was begun in 1889 following the demolition of its predecessor and completed and consecrated in 1933. Designed in Byzantine Revival style, the cathedral reflects the architectural preferences of its era while occupying a site long central to Craiova's political and spiritual life, having once stood near the headquarters of the Ban of Craiova and served a defensive function.
