The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception stands on Temple Street in Sligo, Ireland, and serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Elphin. Built in brick to designs by George Goldie, one of the leading Catholic architects in nineteenth-century England, it was begun in 1869 and opened for worship in 1874. It is the only Romanesque-style cathedral built in the 19th century, and its basilica plan is crowned by a square, pyramid-capped tower rising 70 metres.
