Monreale Cathedral, a Catholic church in Monreale in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, is one of the greatest surviving examples of Norman architecture. Begun in 1174 by William II of Sicily and dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, it was elevated to metropolitan cathedral rank in 1182. It forms part of the Arab-Norman Palermo and Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale UNESCO World Heritage Site.
