Cēsis Castle stands in Cēsis, Latvia, and was founded in 1209 by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. The Teutonic Order later made it a key administrative and economic centre and the seat of the Landmeister in Livland. It was damaged during the Livonian War, when Ivan the Terrible's army besieged it in 1577, and roughly 300 people inside died by blowing themselves up with gunpowder. Today it is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Latvia and an archaeological monument of state importance.
