On the eastern tip of the Island of Mozambique, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte stands as the oldest European building in the Southern Hemisphere, erected by the Portuguese in 1522. Located within Stone Town and accessible through a gate from the adjacent Fort São Sebastião, this Manueline chapel exemplifies the vaulted architectural style characteristic of its era and is counted among the finest examples of Manueline design in Mozambique. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizing the Heritage of Portuguese Influence, the chapel endures as a testament to early Portuguese settlement and architectural ambition in the region.
