The Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, a small Catholic chapel in Vence on the French Riviera, was designed and decorated between 1947 and 1951 under a plan devised by artist Henri Matisse, who regarded it as his masterpiece. Built for the Dominican Order and designed by architects Louis Milon de Peillon, Louis-Bertrand Rayssiguier, and Auguste Perret, the chapel houses numerous original works by Matisse. Its austere white exterior has proven divisive among observers, yet the building is widely recognized as one of the great religious structures of the twentieth century.
