The Chapelle expiatoire is a Roman Catholic chapel in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, built from 1815 to designs by Hippolyte Le Bas and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine in the Neoclassical style. Louis XVIII had it built on the site where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were buried after their executions, dedicating it to them as an act of expiation. Their remains were later moved to the Basilica of Saint-Denis. Each year a commemorative mass is held on the Sunday nearest 21 January, the anniversary of Louis XVI's death.
