The Château de Brest stands at the mouth of the Penfeld river in Brest, Brittany, overlooking one of the largest roadsteads in the world. Built of granite and gneiss, it is the oldest monument in the town and a classified historical monument, designated on 21 March 1923. Its heterogeneous architecture reflects continual adaptation to developments in siege warfare and armament, and it faces the Tour Tanguy across the river, which together guard the Penfeld's entrance.
