The Château de Saumur, a museum and classified historical monument, stands in the French town of Saumur in the Maine-et-Loire département, overlooking the confluence of the Loire and Thouet rivers. Theobald I, Count of Blois, built it in the 10th century as a fortified stronghold against Norman attacks. It passed to Fulk Nerra, count of Anjou, in 1026. After its destruction in 1067, Henry II of England rebuilt it in the later 12th century.
