Château Gaillard
Les Andelys, France
No longer standing
Demolished or destroyed.
Château Gaillard is a medieval castle ruin overlooking the River Seine above the commune of Les Andelys in Normandy, France. Construction began in 1196 under Richard the Lionheart, who was both King of England and feudal Duke of Normandy, and was largely completed in about two years. Its advanced concentric design, with three enclosures separated by dry moats, and its early use of machicolations make it one of the earliest such European castles. Philip II of France captured it in 1204, and Henry IV ordered its demolition in 1599. The ruins are a listed monument historique.
