Chepstow Castle stands above cliffs on the River Wye at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales. Construction began in 1067 under the Norman lord William FitzOsbern, and it is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Originally called Striguil, it was the southernmost of a chain of castles in the Welsh Marches. Its ruins are a Grade I listed building, a National Monument of Wales and a scheduled monument.
